| At the end of the first month of 2012 it already looks to be an
interesting year. The sinking of the passenger ship Costa Concordia
was a great reminder to be willing to take command and responsibility
for our lives. It is always easy to see where others are going
wrong but it is important that we take the events of our outside
world and reflect on them as a reminder of what we might be doing;
how we might be not diligent in looking out for the hazards in
our voyage and avoid the rocks that can so easily sink us.
The ship owners were quick to heap the blame onto the captain
but missed their own responsibility. Everyone in the company is
a reflection of the company and its culture. This wreckage is an
event right out of the deadzone that speaks of an independent and
competitive culture starting at the top. If transformation does
not happen then there is a rude awakening.
Last year in the UK we had another rude awakening when riots spread
quickly and violently across our major cities. This carried all
the hallmarks of unconscious eruption, of energy resulting from
a split-mindedness that seems to be prevalent within our society.
2012 is the beginning of a new era and it is an era of partnership,
of co-operation, of moving closer and forming ties with those around
us. A time of giving up our independence and dissociation, of facing
our fears and still moving forward together.
In recent months, as Europe faces its fiscal challenges the UK
has resorted to withdrawal, separation and independence. This is
a backward step and a step contrary to the flow of the times. In
many ways the world is opening up, there is more cooperation and
mutuality but the change is coming painfully in many quarters and
at a dire cost. Where there has been a refusal to change in our
economic systems and in our governments, there have been groundswells
of people power that seek to force change, like the Arab spring,
or the Occupy movement.
This is a time of change; not to speak of change, not to debate
change, not to pay lip service to change, not to change others,
but to really fundamentally change in practical and meaningful
ways. To change our minds, change the way we see things and change
the way we respond to things, to have the courage to get past our
fears and not act them out. We will not escape our fears by hiding
but by growing in our awareness, expanding our minds and replacing
the fear with love, love for our partners, our families, our friends
and our societies.
We are called to do this for the children, for the people that
are following us and for the others that we share this planet with
who are at the effect of our behavior. So this month for us has
been about going inwards, checking our compass and our course for
a voyage of co-operation, mutuality and intimacy.
Check our events page for on-line seminars starting soon. Also
we will be in Midhurst, West Sussex for a 3 day workshop March
2 – 4. We hope to see you soon.
